Mormonism

Posted in Radio Show, religion with tags , , , , on March 16, 2009 by scatheist

img_01181Tonight on the Atheist & Theist Radio Hour, Phil and I will be discussing Mormonism.  The Mormons and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints have been in the news lately because of a controversial episode of the HBO series Big Love which aired last night.  In this episode, one of the main characters is portrayed going through the “secret” temple ceremony.

Personally, I love the show.  If you haven’t seen it, it’s about a family that practices polygamy and they  believe that they are practicing the true principals of Mormonism.  They have been outcast by their family and the LDS church because of their lifestyle.  Anyway, I strongly recommend it.

I am fascinated with this relatively new religion and their prophet Joseph Smith.  It’s much easier to observe the outrageous falsehoods and claims that Mormon’s make when the real history of Joseph Smith can be studied and examined by secular historians.  My knowledge of the Mormon’s is very limited, so we’re going to have a guest on our program tonight that goes by the name of Baura Kale.  Baura was raised in the religion and now considers himself an atheist and ex-Mormon.  We will also have Art Bulla on the show.  Art is a Mormon and believes that he is “the One Mighty and Strong” that Joseph Smith prophesied would come to set the church in order.  Whoa!  Art has a show on BTR.

I attempted to speak to a member of the local LDS Church to learn about the basic tenets and get a Book of Mormon, but they would not return my calls.  I even went to the church and found an empty parking lot.  All I have to say is they had their chance to convert me and blew it.  🙂

Tonight’s show airs live at 11pmET.  The chat room will be open at 10:30 and we will be taking question from the room or by phone.  See you there.

South Carolina Among Most Religious States

Posted in religion, surveys with tags , , , , , , on February 2, 2009 by scatheist

In a recent Gallup Poll South Carolina ranked third in the top most religious states.  No shit?   Only Mississippi and Alabama ranked higher.  xw2kcfv_-uoaf5qxy-ygbwThe question that Gallup asked was, “Is religion an important part of your life?”  Vermont ranked highest in the least religious state category with all of New England in the top five.  It’s too bad my wife can’t stand the cold.826a77t2-uiaboqv6hkdugWhat amazes me (not really) is look at the comparison between Gallups religiosity map and the presidential red state/blue state map. ztx77iknqkk8tksbouojiwstatemapredbluer512Draw your own conclusions.

Pro-Atheist Ad Coming to Charleston

Posted in atheist, religion with tags , , , , , , , , , on January 23, 2009 by scatheist

6a00d8341c51c053ef010536e4758b970b-450wiOn Monday, the Secular Humanists of the Low Country, the same group that brought us the “In Reason We Trust” license plates, along with the American Humanist Association are putting up a pro atheist billboard in Charleston, SC.  The ad will read “Don’t believe in God?  You are not alone.”  The campaign will definitely be controversial and hopefully go a long way to promoting dialogue. Secular Humanist Vice President Herb Silverman says, “We expect it to generate a mix of reactions from surprise, curiosity, and even uplift.”  The billboard will be placed on highway I-26 near the Spruill Avenue exit.

I am extremely excited about this even though Charleston is about a 3 1/2 hour drive from here.  If anybody sees it in person, send me a picture and I’ll post it.  Hopefully this is just the beginning.

President Obama stated in his inaugural address that this was also a nation of non-believers (the first time the words non-believers were said in an inaugural btw.) Now it’s time to give people the opportunity to see that atheists and/or non-believers do live in the bible-belt and their are a lot of us.

***Update*** Road Rage?

I Believe PlateWell I thought that the “I Believe” license plate fiasco was a dead story, at least for a while, but Tuesday night approximately 200 supporters of the proposed license plates gathered in Greer to hold a rally in an attempt to bolster support for it.  South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster spoke at the rally and has been outwardly supportive of the believers cause.  Last month a federal judge issued an injunction ordering that the state stop production, advertisement, and sales of the plate stating that a federal court would most likely rule the plate unconstitutional.

If you think that its unusual for a state Attorney General to get involved in a cause like this, Mr. McMaster would beg to differ.   “The Attorney General of the state is supposed to take a strong position on the side of the Constitution,“ he says.  “A large percentage of cases are reversed. That means that the lower court was wrong. We think this lower court is wrong in this case.”   He says that the plate dos not establish a religion and adds, “if someone wanted a Hindu plate or a Buddhist plate or any other kind, or a Muslim plate, they could get that. Just get somebody to introduce it, pass it. They have to have enough people to have ‘em printed. But I don’t consider that establishing a religion,“

Huh, really?  How is the Attorney General of the state paying to defend the “I Believe” plates?  How did the Attorney General pay to get to the “I Believe” rally to speak Tuesday night?  If you guessed at the taxpayers expense, you would be correct.

Here is the kicker…  If supporters cannot get the courts ruling overturned, they have a Plan B.  They are going to rename a non-profit organization “I Believe” so that they can legally produce the plate in support of the non-profit.  This is incredible. These asshats already have a legal option to produce these plates, but that’s not good enough.  It’s become about proving, to anyone stuck in traffic I guess,  that this is a Christian state and the state will produce these Christian license plates.

platesSome good news, however, is that Secular Humanists of the Low Country, a South Carolina Non-Profit organization has dealt with previous religiosity on our license plates.  They responded to the “In God We Trust” slogan that appears on some state license plates with an “In Reason We Trust” Free Thought plate.   This is a great option for secularists, atheists, free thinkers, and just reasonable people.  These are available to anyone in the state. You do not have to be a member of the organization.   Oh yeah, they were also produced legally using their non-profit status and didn’t cost taxpayers a dime.

Another Christmas Past, But Better

Posted in personal, religion with tags , , , , , , , , on December 29, 2008 by scatheist

Santa ChristI am the only pronounced atheist in my family.  I have in-laws that are evangelicals and my parents are devout Catholics.  My wife considers herself to be spiritual but won’t label herself with any religion. Our children are brought up secular, but do have religious influences from our parents and extended family. This is something that I struggle with but I am raising them to be critical thinkers.  If religion comes up, my wife and I are very clear about our beliefs.  With all of that being said, I am very happy with the way this Christmas was celebrated in our household.  All of the family was present, we had a good time, drank a few beers, and exchanged gifts. The kids got Rockband for the Wii and I have selfishly taken over the drums 🙂

Guess what?  Not once did anyone in my religious family bring up the birth of Jesus.  Trust me when I say that the lack of Jesusness was not out of respect for me or my atheism.  I think it’s just an evolution of the holiday, at least in our family.  Many hardcore Christians get upset over the commercialism of Christmas and try to get the flock to remember what the holiday is supposed to mean to them.  I don’t particularly care for the commercialism of the holiday either even though I participate in it.  What I like most is everybody in the family getting together, hanging out, listening to music, maybe having one too many drinks, and most of all, taking a break from the daily grind.

Religious traditions are a part of human history, however, we’re proving that we don’t need the religion to enjoy the tradition.

Thank you Horus or Jesus or Santa or whoever….

Hope your Christmas was as cool as mine.
